AYDIN KESTANESİ

The Aydın Commodity Exchange has made significant efforts to promote the "Aydın Kestanesi" grown in the Aydın province with its unique characteristics and local qualities, on both national and international platforms.

The Aydın Commodity Exchange first applied to the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office in 2010 for a geographical indication designation for "Aydın Kestanesi" and obtained registration on 24.11.2011, protecting the "Aydın Kestanesi."

To increase the international recognition of the Aydın Kestanesi and its added value, an application was submitted to the European Union on September 8, 2015, with the reference number TR-PDO-0005-01362.

On September 24, 2020, the Aydın Kestanesi was published in the Official Journal of the European Commission under the decision 2020/1321 and was registered by the European Commission as Turkey's 4th geographically indicated product.

The distinguishing features of "Aydın Kestanesi" are its fruit size, easy-to-peel shell, and the situation where the seed coat enters the flesh. The fruit size is considerably larger than chestnuts grown in other regions. This is because the chestnuts grown in Aydın are cultivated on plateaus irrigated by the Büyük Menderes River, in a temperate climate zone, and at an ideal altitude. The shell of the Aydın Kestanesi is shiny and easily peeled, while the fleshy part inside is quite soft. Its quality characteristics, combined with the geographical features of Aydın, make it a unique value for all of Turkey.
