Pine nut production, which generally takes place in mountainous areas, holds great importance for rural development due to its significant contribution to the local economy. Aydın province accounts for 60% of the pine nuts produced in Turkey. Of the pine nuts produced in the region, 80% are exported, bringing foreign currency income to the country.
The climate characteristics, soil structure, and appropriate pH level of the Aydın province, along with the surrounding mountains, give Aydın Çam Fıstığı unique characteristics. In other regions of Turkey where pine nut cultivation is common, a stone pine tree typically bears 20 cones, while in Aydın, the average is 56 cones per tree. In other regions, the average yield per hectare is 60-70 kg of shelled pine nuts, while in Aydın, it is an average of 120 kg. Its quality characteristics, combined with the geographical features of Aydın, make it a unique value for all of Turkey.
As Aydın Commodity Exchange, efforts are being made to promote pine nuts as an important value-added product for the economy of Aydın province and the region, both nationally and internationally.
On 24 August 2023, an application was submitted for European Union geographical indication registration.
